With a 28 teams competing (a record number of teams, by the way) for the eight sections, the field was an impressive sight and its profile was further raised with The Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor, Michael Harbison making the presentations to the winning teams. And continuing the regional teams theme, the boys from Pirie took out the Crossbow Teams Trophy. Steinborner Holden of Gawler also lent its presence to the event with two new VE Holdens on display, impressing the Lord Mayor. Shaun Moylan of Steinborners has indicated it is keen to support archery in SA. Conditions were a little unusual for this event, with the temperature climbing to an unseasonal high of 29oC and with a gusty and generally unrelenting N-NW breeze. The Juniors Commmittee continued its great work in providing catering at the event to help the juniors get to Perth next year. The general comment heard that it was a great day and, you would have to say, a job well done by all. Photos of the event and the winning teams can be found in the 2006 Photo Gallery at the base of this page. ARCHERY SA State Indoor Championships (Results) A cold and drizzly day - just PERFECT for Indoor! The State Championships were shot at Mitsubishi in conjunction with the 2006 National Indoor Archery Championships, the reasults of which were being tracked via a Web based program. The State Champs were shot by some 75 archers in the morning and those who wished to compete in the National Indoor completed the second FITA Indoor 18m Round in the afternoon. In the National competition, over 650 archers took part; a phenomenal effort. Eden Invitation Tournament - "The Perfect Round" (Results) A Perfect Round on a perfect day - a good time had by all... and some good scores to boot! Tyro Tournament & AJ Barter Veterans' Tournament (Results) ARCHERY SA State Clout Championships (Results) Yet another perfect day - good shooting, good friends and the weather could not have been better. ARCHERY SA State Field Championships (Results) Perfect weather, a very pleasant 25oC, meant that even though a record 58 archers in 17 groups were squeezed onto the 12 target course, the shoot ran smoothly without major hold-ups and was completed inside 4 hours. The squeeze was nothing compared to the car park chaos, but it was all taken in good spirit and the day and the lunch was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Graham Jones' Philadelphia Tournament (Results) ARCHERY SA State Target Championships (Results) Australia Day Field Tournament (Results) In slightly humid, but otherwise perfect conditions, where the temperature did not exceed 27oC, the shoot was relaxed and convivial. Some excellent performances, amplified by the number of Arrowhead claims resulted. Blue Lake Tournament (Results) (by Graham Lock)
Blue Lake Archers held its inaugural Tournament on Saturday with a total field of 30 archers competing in 13 different divisions. A strong contingent of 11 local Club members was bolstered by the 19 visiting archers from Adelaide Clubs that had accepted the invitation to the tournament. Representatives from Adelaide Archery Club (AAC), Kidman Archers (KA), Cressy Bowmen (CB), Eden Field Archers (EFA) and Strathalbyn Target Archers (STA) made the journey to Mount Gambier for a weekend that included a coaching session conducted on Sunday Morning. The conditions facing the field Saturday afternoon at Archery Park were less than desirable with hot and windy conditions that dispelled some of the preconceived visions of Mount Gambier's weather, this required some additional precautions to ensure the well-being of the archers. Portable shade shelters, copious water supplies and longer rest breaks between distances provided some relief from the 400C heat. In the 13 divisions that had received nominations, several State champions were present, the premier competitor was undoubtedly Pat Coghlan of STA and who is the reigning National and State target champion and a member of Australia's international competition team. Sue Martin, Gerald Hawkins, Aileen Anderson, Tristan Barrett and locals Allan Pendrey and Darcy McCourt rounded out the current state champions in attendance. Nominations also revealed archery as a family sport with two pairs of husband and wife competitors in the Martin's and Welden's, a father and son with the local Schoenfisch's, and a father, son and grandson combination a formidable array of the Coghlan family. All archers regardless of division competed in a Sydney round; this is 120 scored arrows at four distances of 70, 60, 50 and 40 metres all distances used the 122cm target face. Outright scores were dominated by Pat Coghlan who, not unexpectedly, posted the highest rated score ever recorded at Mount Gambier's Archery Park, his 1147 points from a possible 1200 in less than ideal conditions earning a score rating of 101. Peter Bailey also broke through the 1100 point barrier to be the winner of his division. While the lions share of top places were snared by the visiting archers, local pride was upheld with Allan Pendrey and Sam Schoenfisch winning the Master Men's compound bow and Cub boy's compound bow respectively. Trevor Garside and Darcy McCourt filled the runner up positions in the Master Men's compound and Cadet Boy's compound bow respectively, while Graham Lock picked up a third place in the Open Men's Compound Bow. Presentations of the specially crafted unique cloth badge featuring the Blue Lake Archers logo in gold, silver or bronze were made to the various division winners and place getters by Club President Ian Harris during a formal dinner at a local restaurant on Saturday evening. Early Sunday morning found the local archers being coached by Pat Coghlan and former state coach Jim Beatty, this session proved extremely valuable as the individual archers were assessed and suggestions made to correct form or equipment issues before a session on equipment repair and tuning. The members were tremendously appreciative of the lessons learned over an intense 3-hour session, which capped a highly successful weekend for the Club. Due to the continuing extreme weather conditions the usual Sunday afternoon Club event was cancelled. Blue Lake Archers normally conducts its Club shoots at Archery Park near the Blue Lake, commencing 1:30pm. Visitors are most welcome and all enquires can be directed to 8725 0980.
